I'm new here, but recently have been reading your posts. Good to know I'm not the only one! A lot of your experiences sound so familiar. Very frustrated because we are planning a trip next week (we didn't go on our last planned trip because my daughter caught a sv). This morning (I work in a swimming pool) another coworker came in after "not being able to hold anything down" all night. So disgusting. I just hope we can still go on the trip, and hate that I will be obsessing about this for the next week. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the support, even though I've just been reading.

Welcome to the site! That sucks that your coworker was sick and came to work anyway - don't avoid her like the plague(ha ha) but wash your hands well! Good luck!

I work at a pool, though as a sub now cuz my lessons kids kept getting sick near me, and all the other guards/instructors were coming down with mono. We're always short staffed so people kept coming to work with all kinds of junk from colds to strep. I decided I didn't have the immune system to keep up with that, esp. w/school. I just found this site a few days ago and it's been really reassuring to see that I'm not quite the freak I thought I was. Or maybe I am, but at least I'm not the ONLY one. heh. Glad you joined.

Hi, I'm new here too and so glad to have found all of you! It's like coming home. Stormchaser, I used to work at a pool over one summer and I'll never forget the entire staff getting angry with me when a kid got sick and I refused to go back in the water. I haven't been in a pool since (that was three years ago).

Freak: "a markedly unusual or irregular thing or occurence".

I can with confidence say none of us on this site are freaks. At least not because of the emet!

Heh, can't blame you on that one Stephanie. Fortunately its our policy (and I believe the health dept./CDC's aquatic policy) that the pool should be shut down and chlorine shocked if someone has an accident in it. So they had no reason to be upset with you. Ours is the only pool I'll swim at cuz I know they follow protocol, every time. No matter how much it pisses the patrons off for losing valuable lap swim or lesson time. I used to be competitive and I'd like to be again, so I'm glad I have a place where I don't need to be weirded out.

Thanks for all your responses. So far, I haven't had too many kids get sick in the pool. Just a couple times, and probably because lessons are right after dinner. Fortunately, our pool follows protocol and makes everyone sit out for 30 minutes after. I don't think chlorine kills everything, plus it takes time for it to work. I just try to remember all the times I swam all winter in pools and rarely got sick. So maybe chlorine does kill more than I think.

It's great discovering that others are out there. This place has been a godsend to me. I've learned to cope by learing and laughing on this board!
