Hello everyone.

Just knowing that this site exists, makes me feel better. I had no idea I could find a forum like this. Actually, I just signed up today, I'm learning how to use this and trying to find out what else can I do here or how could I get help... So, if u recommend something to me (what to read, etc) please let me know.

I'm a 20 year old male, student, mexican, and have this terrible phobia. I see here that there are people who are 30 or 40 and I just wonder how could they stand this thing for so long :S

I actually haven't talked ever with someone that has emetophobia. When I knew that this fear had a name, I thought I was completely crazy and felt so alone. I've tryed to contact someone with emetophobia here in Mexico, but I just can't find someone. I've done some research and it seems that treatments have been very succesful in London...so, I've been looking for a good therapyst here though...

Uhm... I don't know what else can I write, this is kind of weird to me, just hope to talk soon with sby.

Take care.

Jaimej, welcome to the forum! I'm glad you found us. I'm also in my early 20s and hoping like you to have overcome my emet by the time I reach the 30s or 40s - I don't think I can stand it that much longer!!

I really hope you find a good therapist close to home. It seems like there are so many emets in the UK, I almost want to move there because I heard once there's even a program in hospital you can go to especially for emet. I think I would do almost anything it took to get over it!

Welcome

musicmaam: I know whay you mean, i wish that in other countrys , they would take a que from the U.K., and have more therapists and treatments for us. MAybe even if some would travel to dif. countries, helping us out, and make house calls ,lol.

Hiya Jaimiej,

Welcome to the site hunni!!! Im really glad you found us too and hopefully we can help you a little. It really is a relief to find this place, I have felt sooooo mcuh better since joining!!

The UK isnt that great guys!! lol.. Not where I live anyway unless you got a very understanding doctor with good connections, or a LOT of money to go private. I paid to go private and got hypnotherapy which helped an awful lot with my confidence and self-esteem, and once that got stronger, my phobia and anxiety got smaller. That was 13 years ago and I have never had another panic attack (touch wood!!)!! I think its like everywhere and anywhere, it just depends on where you live and how much money you got!! When I had a full blown nervous breakdown when I was 18 (13 years ago), they couldnt fine one single therpaist/psychotherpist/shrink...etc to help me. NOT ONE!!! They said there was noone to help me in the whole borough or any surrounding borough,so I had ZERO help!! Thats how great that UK is!!! lol. Mind you, where I live in London, had one of the WORST reputations in the country for mental health help.

Anyway, so I have just spent years getting myself better, and now I live a relatively 'normal' life. I go out to pubs/clubs/concerts, I eat whatever i want, i go to work, i have good friends and a great boyfriend. I still have the odd bad day, but theres always a reason for it!! And the times in between my bad patches are getting longer and longer. So there is light at the end of the tunnel!!

Hope we can help you!!!

(((hugs))) xxxxxx

Hello and welcome.

I will soon be going back into hospital and the doctor there specialises in emetophobia and body dysmorphic disorder. I also do emotional freedom therapy and am having great results. since i started i have had hardly any panic attacks when i was having them every other day. doesn't work for everyone but i am really loving it. i will soon be training to become a therapist in emotional freedom therapy after i get out of hospital and am living a more normal life.

Well, actually I've been looking for hypnotherapy. I've heard it is good and that it has worked for a lot people.

I've gone to a therapist, but I really didn't get "enough help" and then I went to a schrink and she sent me three different drugs: anti-psychotic, Anti depressive and an anxiolytic. So, I was like three things to take everyday for a year at least. I don't want to be on drugs either. So I decided not to take them.

And the worst, is that when I'm on vacation (like now), I have more free time so the phobia starts to attack more intensively and it's just in my head more often. I hate it...

Hello Jaimej03 and welcome.

I'm in my forties but didn't have this phobia all of my life. It kind of crept up on me 3 years ago.

heyyy!
welcome - my name is cristofer and I am an 18 year old male. I currently live in London, UK but i have lived in spain!

I have suffered from this since I was 6 years old but I don't worry about seeing others be sick but I worry about myself being sick!

I have also seen a therapist and it did work for me because it has made me relax and has given me some tools to fight the anxious feelings.

You are mexican? Tell me if you speak spanish - it is my second language!

See you!

My therapyst also gave me some techniques but I just can't really apply them when I feel bad.

Sí soy mexicano y hablo español, es mi lengua materna.

What else have u done to get better?

Welcome, jaime. I only joined here recently myself, but have been amazed at how supportive and welcoming everybody is! I'm 24 and I've had this phobia since childhood, though it seems to be getting worse lately. I've never had formal therapy. Hablo español tambien, pero no muy bien. :-P

People here are great. Allypally has just started a buddy-up system in another thread that may help you lots, too-- especially if there are a few other people from Mexico around here somewhere! Anyhow, good luck-- I hope you find this site to be invaluable in helping you cope with the phobia we all share here to some degree.

jeje genial. pues espanol no es mi lengua materna pero he vivido en españa y trabajado allí. entonces, he necesitado aprenderlo. hablo inglés (que es mi lengua materna), español, italiano y un poquito de catalan (yo viví en barcelona!)

Well, with respect to tecniques, some deep breathing exercises and some tips on how to take anxiety. Here is what I recommend:

1. Exercise regularly - this is something that completely holds anxiety at bay.
2. Eat a healthy, balanced diet - this makes you feel better inside and also helps you fight off viruses if you were to get one.
3. Try and get busy - eg. spend time with friends, go for a coffee, exercise with friends
4. Talk to friends about your phobia - be honest with them... they may be able to help you!
5. Do some relaxation exercises ON A DAILY BASIS - if you enter a day feeling relaxed, those feelings will continue during the entire day!

if you want to talk more, my msn is [email protected]

de dónde eres en mexico??
hasta luego

Hey Jaime,
The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund J Bourne has been recommended several times on this forum. I have the book and it does help me relax at times.

BTW, the picture of myself in the avatar was taken in Puerto Vallarta.

Thanx 4 all the info u haven given to me.

Lyntess, do u have a direct link of the website u r telling me??

Centipede: I've already wrote the name of the book of Edmund J, thank u very much. That's a cool picture haha, when did u come to Puerto Vallarta?Did u like it?

U said the phobia came up like 3 years ago. It's said that emetophobis is related to a "bad event" that makes u relate the fear of v*ing with that situation. So, I wonder if it's easier for u to identify the event 'cause u r an adult know.

In my case I don't know what made me fear of v*ing, I was a child when that started to happen. My therapyst and a schrink told me that if I knew that "event" it would be easier to overcome emetophobia.

Chris, tahnx also 4 the techniques, I guess I've done some of them. Thanx 4 ur msn, I'll add u on my list. But I think we won't talk often there haha 'cause of the "time difference" between Mex and UK.
