For my 21st my friends want to go get drunk but of course I am terrified to drink because I don't want to get to that point of drunken sickness.

I will never get drunk, I like being in control of my body, but I'm scared that the smallest bit of alcohol will get me sick.

The only drink I have ever tasted was a few sips of Margareta.

I don't particularly have a weak/sensitive stomach but lately I have been getting nauseas just by stressing.

I know it really depends person by person but how much alcohol has made you v* and how much could you tolerate?

i dont know how much i can tollerate because of this emetophobia, i allways avoid getting to the point of hang over.

now everyone can be different, but i can honestly tell you, you can enjoy a buzz without any worries of hang over or being sick.

i take it you will be drinking strong spirits?

just make sure you dont drink them fast, they go down easily, and if you drink too many too quickly, you will get drunk, and if your really spinning, be sick.

the only time i was sick was when i had too much in to short of time. but i didn't have a hangover the next day, and me being drunk helped soooooooo much in the occurrence of being sick. (i had no anxiety, panic, nothing).

anyway, that time, i think i had about 12 shots in an hour, could have been a little more, or a little less.

if you hardly ever drink, you will be prone to getting effected easily, so make sure:

    1. don't drink shots too quickly.

    2. try and keep it to a shot per half hour, and just see how you go, when you get tipsy, just drink slower, and try and be on your last drink (if you want to be 100% assured of not being sick or being drunk drunk).

    3. before you go to sleep, DRINK a glass of water, even if its not a lot of water, drink some, its good to drink water before you sleep after a drink, it helps hydrate you *alcohol dehydrates* and if you did have a hangover say, the water would've helped.

all honesty, if you want to play it 100% safe, dont drink more than 6 shots, or 3 doubles. or 3 pints.

drink them slowly, try and keep in mind and monitor how your stomach feels, and how tipsy you could be getting, if your drinking wine, then im not sure how many glasses.

try not to worry too much about alcohol, its not really a drink that makes you v* too much of anything makes you sick. just know your limit.

    have fun!

oh i also forgot one very important thing about drinking. you can not, i say AGAIN you can not drink on an empty stomach, if you do, you will be much more prone to hangover and being sick. if for some unlucky reason u have an empty stomach, stick to 3 shots max or 1 pint :|

i know as an emetophobic you might not feel comfortable eating and drinking together, but honestly drinking on an empty stomach makes it more likely!

All I can say is just do not worry about it. The smallest amount will not get you sick! Trust me I have been through the same fears. I know you will still worry, but seriously just have fun. Forget about it for a while. And if your anything like me, you will feel proud of yourself after that you did it. Sorry that sounds weird but sometimes you just have to stop letting this control you, just not worth it.

Well to answer your question...it takes a lot for me to get sick from it. Just like I have had 16 oz of like 80 proof stuff and have been okay, but others I have gotten sick.

You are more likely to get sick if you worry or in my opinion if you dont eat. And keep drinking water!!

I know I do not have much advice but do not worry about it. You will not get sick from just a little.

I've never v* from drinking and have had maybe 6 beers in an evening. I'm pretty slim and I didn't even feel n*.

I have only been sick once due to alcohol but it was not due to the quantity but actually due to the mixture of different drinks!

Therefore, my main advice is stick to the same drink all night and you should be able to have fun

I can manage 7-8 beers in one drinking session without being sick but that is my limit! and im not a lightweight!

I really am surprised at how much alcohol some emets are willing to drink(please don't read any judgements here...totally not intended!) I'd have thought the threshold for people to start v*ing was way less. I was always under the impression that the v* was a result of the body treating the alcohol as a poison, but yet it seems like some people get sick from relatively little. I've heard people here saying that the dehydration from alcohol is what actually causes the n* and v*ing which could be plausible as alcohol absorbs lots of water, which would it seem vary by the strength and purity of the liquors. This could range anywhere from .01% for some weak beers to 95.6% pure for everclear and moonshine so it seems like a hard question to answer.

theirs a few ways of being sick from drinking.

the mixing of drinks is an urban myth, although tbh, iv never tried to find out if it is.

but when it comes to mixing drinks, its more dangerous when your mixing the types of beverages. e.g. beer, whine and spirits.

prncesspnk, it was my bday 2 days ago now, and i only had 2 drinks, i would usually drink more, but latley i have been over cautious on my stomach.

in any case, if you want to drink more, just increase how much u drink from now on each time u go out for a drink. to be on the safe side though, i wouldnt recommended more than 6 shots for some one who doesnt drink much, and don't drink them quickly.

I won't even drink. It really doesn't have much to do with my emets. BUT when other people vomit from drinking then my emets kick in and I get freaked and mad.

i think it depends on your tolerance to alcohol and the type of alcoholic beverage you drink. wine for instance is quite acidic and fairly high in alcoholic volume so i dont think you could drink too much of it without feeling ill.
another big factor is if you mix your drinks. i always stick to a good guest ale and never would think of say having cider, vodka, wine etc with it.

also if you drink on an empty stomach the alcohol gets into your bloodstream quicker and will cause you to get that "icky feeling" quicker.

finally if you do drink, pace yourself dont gulp it down like there is no tomorrow. i have been out and drunk 6 pints of reasonably strong ale and been ok because i have just sipped it all night rather than knocking them back.

I'm not that much into drinking anyways(even if i wasn't emetophobic)

it makes me sad that you wont drink on your birthday and have fun.

i wont drink either and i feel like it is the main reason i dont have a lot of friends...because you cant really invite me out for drinks. usually i hold a drink in my hand and ppl dont notice.

the only time i have ever been drunk in my entire life was the first time i ever drank. i had 2 beers and went home and threw up. that is the last time i threw up. i smoked pot at the same time too and i think thats why i got sick. either way, i wont drink again.

it makes me sad. i hate this stupid phobia, i just want to be able to have fun without losing my mind.

im so uptight and boring and depressing at bars cause i dont drink.

I think weed and alcohol together can be a disaster. To the original poster, how well aware of your phobia are your friends? Do you think they might be willing to keep the alcohol consumption to a minimum for your sake? After all its YOIUR birthday, just cause most people want to get plastered on their 21st doesn't mean everyone does...maybe you want to do something a bit different...just go out and drink in moderation, or not at all...what have you. I don't think you should back out completely based on your post last night it seems you might wind up kicking yourself for not enjoying it as much as you should.

I want to second the idea that weed+alcohol may equal v*. My mom once got sick after that and I was in the room, and I actually think that may have started my emet!

But, you should be able to have a few drinks and be totally fine!
