Does anyone else ever wake up in the middle of the night... for no apparent reason... and have anxiety attacks at like... 3am? I seriously hate that, and it keeps happening!

That used to happen to me. It hasn't in a few years now, partly because I go to sleep so late to ensure that I'm super tired and will sleep through the night.

But last time it happened, I woke around 1 in the morning and I was living in my dorms, and I started to freak out/shake and instantly feel sick, yada yada, you know the deal. I went down the hall into the bathroom and panicked and then paced around the hallway. I went back to my room and my roommate returns from wherever she was and is like, "You're still awake?" and keeps chatting. She couldn't tell at all.

I have no idea what causes them. I was way more stressed my junior and senior years of college but never had a problem with anxiety attacks then.

My emet is also much worse at night - 90% of my n* attacks and panic attacks have been at night - usually very late when everyone is asleep etc - it's almost as though my brain does it on purpose.

Are you most afraid of v* on your own or at night? My worst fear is v* alone...I'd need people around for support and words of rationality in such a situation. I think that's why my brain tricks me into feeling most n* at night.

I've not woken up though with a random panic attack like the one you describe, unless it's been genuine n* or n* caused by a bad dream. I also went through a phase of going to bed as late as possible, and it's a habit that's stuck, I never go to sleep unless I can't keep my eyes open a minute longer!!

it happens to me all the time. what's the most annoying is when it happens at 5 or 5:30 in the morning, when I have to get up at 6 for work!

That's what I do! I'm actually scared to fall asleep any earlier than 11 because I have a tendency to have panic attacks late night/early morning and also had the sv* at night so it just ruined sleeping altogether.

I still sometimes wake up at like..5 or something and feel nauseas.I think it's because that's the time my dad wakes up to go to work and I am always afraid that I will get d* or v* and anybody up will hear it lol so freaking stupid but true.

When I get panic attacks I get that heart racing feeling/panicky AND totally nauseas like i'm going to v*..every...single...time.

And it sucks.Edited by: xmdslatx

Yeah, that's really what I mean by anxiety attacks. Maybe they're not flat out panic attacks, but since I don't believe I'm really sick, it's anxiety that causes me to feel like I am. It's 12:25am where I am and it just happened again. UGH!!! I seriously hate this.

This used to happen all the time a few years ago, but I haven't had a problem every night like this since. EVERY night. Ugh.

Oh, and I have always had that habit too of going to bed as late as possible, to ensure that I slept through the night, but I just started college and I'm too exhausted everyday to stay up much later than 11.

mxw08 - you're right about the anxiety that makes you actually feel sick when you're not really. I find even just the fleeting thought or memory of a bad experience can cause n*.

I'm up late again, 12.28am, waiting till I'm super tired to go to sleep...no wonder emetophobics across the world are falling asleep at work!!

I don't have full-blown panic attacks, but for the last few months, nearly every night, I've been asleep for about an hour and I suddenly wake up feeling like the v* is in my throat, heart pounding, sweating, I sit bolt upright and sometimes grab the bucket that I keep under my bed most nights now....and then it just goes away. My heart rate goes back down and I realise my stomach feels fine.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? My social phobia has got really bad in about the same time and they might be related. I don't dream about v*ing or anything, this just happens.

I am the same way its mostly at night when others are sleeping and my brain gets going ... its terrible some nights.
I have started trying relaxation methods to go to sleep (ya know picture a nice paradise spot, listen to ocean waves, etc ..) sometimes it works but it takes a huge effort.

sometimes, i'll come out of a dead sleep so suddenly in the middle of
the night for no apparent reason. even if i'm not feeling ill at all, i
quickly make myself n* because of anxiety. i'll freak out because i'll
wonder why the hell i'd wake up so suddenly unless i was feeling sick,
which doesn't even make sense at all... ugh i hate anxiety!

I do the same thing, prncesspnk. I go to sleep late to ensure that I will sleep through the night and if I suddenly wake up I freak because I think, "Oh my gosh, I could get sick! What if..." And then I can't get back to sleep. That makes school the next day so hard.

Hey! I've actually read a few things about this. People who just have anxiety problems (no phobia, just stress and stuff) will often times wake up in the middle of the night. I read a few stories about people who go to bed feeling fine and then they get up in the middle of the night and go to the ER thinking they are having a heart attack (because they don't really have a phobia, something to be scared of, they just say they feel like they are dying). I'm not sure if it has anything to do with that - like, I know phobias are anxiety disorders, but I've heard way more stories of people having random panic attacks (who have no phobia) in the middle of the night, and then not ever having them any other time.

Like today i have to be up early as i have a driving lesson! But oh well!

I think my anxity stems from the fact that i think its not natural for my body to wake up in the night unless there is osmething wrong, i.e. to v* hency why i panic grr
1 ok im going now!

yes! i do have them! i go through like spurts of having not so much panic attacks...but something of all of a sudden waking me up and I shoot up and have to sit there for a min. I am out of breath sometimes when it happens. It usually makes me n* but sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes its a full blown panic attack....but like i said i go through spurts of having them all the time...and then ill go awhile without having them.

YES!
I will wake up at almost 3 on the dot, and am in almost a full blown panic.
I'm not sure why it happens, but i did notice they happened more when i was on an antidepressent.
But they are one of the most annoying things...ever!

Olivia - hope you sleep better tonight! It's definitely not fun driving with no sleep.

It really sucks when it happens so late at night when you have no one to talk to and hardly anyone's online. Best thing to do is try and suitably tire yourself out in the daytime so you just sleep through
