    Default Norovirus on surfaces.

How long does the Norovirus live on surfaces such as a counter top?

2 weeks or sometimes more...it depends on the environment. I read the virus thrives more in a dry climate, which I always though it would survive longer in humidity. Regardless, a bleach/water solution will kill it on surfaces

10-14 days on most hard surfaces, less on porous surfaces.

This is so strange to know since most viruses need a living host to survive.

Most viruses do. Colds and flus can really only survive for 48 hours on nonporous surfaces but less for porous surfaces. Some viruses can survive for a long time, like months, but you're unlikely to encounter any of these in your life. Norovirus is the hardiest of the common viruses you might catch, and it can survive from 12 hours to about 14 days. Sometimes longer if say it's in a cold dark place.
