Default Should I tell my doctor about my emetophobia

I have a doctors appointment today to see if I can get medication that can help me sleep. Should I also bring up my emetophobia to her.

Of course! She may be able to direct you to therapy or anti-anxiety medication

I let my doc know about my emetophobia right of the bat. That way she is cautious to prescribe me things without vomiting as a side effect first. She also knows that I don't want to hear about how her other patients were sick, etc.

I told my Dr. She was great with it. Very understnading. THEN she moved! So I found a new one. I told him. He basically told me to get over and deal with it. I found a new doctor. She to is very understanding and sympathetic. She even wiped down the chair for me when I went to have my bloodwork done. Definately tell your doctor. If they don't understand and try to help you, find a new doctor!

I really don't think you should. I have a lot of genuine stomach issues that are separate from my anxiety and if a doctor finds out about my phobia they automatically reduce my symptoms to being caused by anxiety. Also, I worked for a pain specialist and if it was known that the patient had anxiety he wouldnt take them as seriously.

It sounds like you should find a new doctor! Even though we sometimes have phantom stomach problems, nothing should be automatically disregarded just because we have anxiety!

They are never disregarded but it is always the assumption that anxiety caused it. And even if your doctors don't say it, it's likely that's what they think. I worked for the nicest doctor and he knew how powerful the mind can be, and people with anxiety are sick more often. I wouldn't say anything if you think your issues are separate from anxiety. My old GI doctor thought that my stomach issues were because of anxiety because my tests weren't coming up with anything, but then I moved to Seattle and didnt tell my new GI about my anxiety issues and he was much more thorough and found a tumor on my spleen that the other wouldn't have. And the other one was very kind, and a great doctor. But it absolutely makes a difference.

Maybe I just have a stellar doctor, but she's always extremely thorough with anything, never disregarding anything due to anxiety. I guess I'm lucky

Definitely tell your doctor! They can't help you if they don't know. I am always super up front about my emet with doctors; most of them are really understanding.

I've never kept my emet a secret. It helps my doctor when he gives me medication because he knows i musn't have anything too strong or that could upset my stomach. It also helps when i ask for anti emetics.
