    Hey everyone,

I joined this site a few weeks ago, and haven't posted any messages yet, but I have been reading the forums for quite a few months now. I basically just had a question about hypnotherapy and if anyone here has tried it, or heard any success stories. I know the topic of a certain book has been discussed, and doing it by yourself, but I was kind of curious about going to see a professional who does that. I've researched it on Google, and find that there are many claims from people with phobias and bad habits to have been cured by hypnosis. It sounds almost too good to be true to just tap into your subconscious, find out where the fear came from, and learn how to teach your brain that it isn't scary anymore. I would love to get rid of this phobia once and for all. I'm seeing a new therapist next week, but I have doubts about things working out. I'm afraid things will just take a long, long time to fix and I want to be better NOW. I just want to live my life normally and not have to worry about this anymore. Sage, if you have any info. related to hypnotherapy I would love the input. Also anyone else with anything to say about it as well.

Thanks a lot faith-marilyn. The replies I read were basically what I was looking for. I know that there is no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to curing this phobia, or any phobia, but what I hope to gain from it is perhaps a cure in many sessions, but more realistically a way to better deal with the anxiety and learn relaxation techniques. Since I posted the message, I set up an appointment with a psychotherapist who is certified in hypnotherapy as well as CBT. What I hope is that through some regular sessions I can get the therapist familiar with who I am, what I want to accomplish, etc... and then see whether I should start with CBT or a session of hypnotherapy. I am set on becoming less fearful and being able to live life like you should. I mean, if I'm not cured, I at least want to be able to handle situations rationally and be able to realize that I am in no danger. I think controlling the irrational thoughts is my key priority. When my mind is focused on other things, like when I'm in school, I don't have any fear at all. I want my whole day to be like that. Well thanks again, and I'll keep you all posted on how things go.

By the way, a little intro: My name's Michelle, I'm 19 and live in Texas, and I'm currently a sophomore in college hoping to pursue a career in Industrial Technology/Engineering.

Good wisdom here. Everyone's right about the "quick fix". But still, you should be able to experience significant symptom relief in as few as 10-12 sessions (3 months, if you go weekly). It's extinguishing the phobia forever that takes years...so don't despair.

As for hypnotherapy, it's a perfectly fine addition to a qualified CBT therapist's program. If I had complete choice, I'd go for someone who does EMDR rather than hypnosis, as the clinical evidence seems to point to EMDR as adjunct therapybeing more effective with emetophobia. Nevertheless, hypnotherapy isn't crazy or anything. But I wouldnt' recommend a "hypnotherapist" either...especially those bizarre internet claims about curing phobia in an hour over the phone or whatever. Stick with the tried and true, where there is clinical evidence of successful treatment by hundreds if not thousands of sufferers.

    Good luck!

I would love a quick fix!! But life isn't that easy. I am still searching for the right person, someone with the right letters at the end of the name, whom I feel comfortable with and someone who has treated people with this phobia. Please let us know how it goes.

I've been in hypnotherapy for a few weeks now, and I think its starting to help a little bit. I did the EMDR thing for two years and it never took with me, I guess the key to panic and phobias is that its all about you. We are all wired differently, what works for one, doesn't always work for another....so don't despair, just look at it the way I do. I'll try anything once if it means I can kick this fear and panic to the curb forever....

Well, mostly hypnotherapy is about learning to internally calm yourself down, we are currently working on the panic aspectof my problems, then onto the phobia part. Its hard to describe, just very relaxing, makes you feel kinda sleepy afterwords, or at least it does to me...

Only once have I had a panic attack when I was under, it was frightening, but my therapist coached me through it and it was gone in a matter of seconds. So far what I am learning about hypnotherapy is that it is all about quieting the mind from the little intrusive thoughts that can get in there and lead to panic.

if you have any other questions, feel free to email, IM, or PM...
