    Unhappy Hysterectomy hospital stay.....

On October 8th I am going into the hospital for a hysterectomy and my biggest fear is that I will have to share a room with someone else. There are a thousand other things I should be worried about concerning my own health but all I can think about is being trapped in a room with another patient that may V* for 3 to 4 days. I am going to beg my doctor for a private room but I don't know that she has any say in the matter and idk if my insurance will pay for a private room. I know this is silly to everyone in my family but I am a nervous wreck.

Oh geez, you poor thing I am so sorry to hear you have to go through this operation. I'm assuming your doctor/specialist knows about your emet? I would definitely explain your circumstances to the doctor and hopefully they may be able to do something for you. I am sure any one of us on this site would feel the same way about sharing a room with other patients. After your operation, I am sure you will be very drugged up, so things probably wont bother you as much - you will be out of it! What about speaking to your doctor about having some kind of sedative during the whole stay to help you remain calm (something like Xanax maybe) - it's definitely worth a shot! Have you taken any type of sedative before? Hope you feel better soon - try and stay calm and let us know how you are.
    Cheers,
    Daniela

I have a pre-op appointment with my dr. on the 27th and I will def be asking for some type of sedative. Thank you for that advice because I hadn't even thought of that. I have taken most of the anti-anxiety drugs before with good results. I will keep you updated and thank you again for the advice and support. It makes a big difference to know there are others out there who understand.

Hi again I definitely understand - sedatives will definitely help - they make you feel so good and will keep you calm. And definitely tell you specialist you want the strongest anti-emet drug and explain your phobia. Make them understand you need special care and I am sure you will find they will really look after you - like the girl on this site who recently had her tonsils out in hospital. She was really taken care of. I hope you feel better - and you can even take sedatives a few days before the op to help you relax - but get some good advice from your doctor as to how often and when to take them. That's what I would do The medical system is different here in Australia and I'm not sure how it works in the US. For example, here in Aus, I have private health insurance which means I can stay in a private hospital if I need and elect for a private room (but you are not guaranteed one). Keep us posted Take care
