The reason some people laugh in our faces is because telling "normal" people that we are in therapy because we're afraid of vomiting is like saying we're in therapy because we're afraid of breathing. To most people, it's just another bodily function, albeit a very unpleasant one.
I once watched a show where they were talking about strange phobias and people were terrified of things like olives and aluminum foil. I laughed. I thought it was the most ridiculous thing to have a phobia of these things. But then I realized that their reaction to olives and aluminium foil was exactly the same extreme reaction I have to vomiting. So, while I don't understan their phobia and laughed at it (and still do to be honest), I understand that it affects them exactly the same as my phobia affects me. BUT I STILL LAUGH.

I'm so sorry you went through this, and I hope you're feeling better now. It was nice of your boss to let you go home. If he was a complete prick and didn't take your phobia seriously, he would not have let you go home, he would have expected you to pull yourself together and get to work.

actually if any mental illness affects your job you can be let go. most states have whats called at-will employment. im sorry you went through this anyways though.
