Default Im having surgery and Im more worried about getting sick with anesthesia! !!

Well im a 35 yr old mother of 3! I have been suffering from emetephobia since i was 14. I am scheduled to have a minimally invasive surgical procedure done this thursday! The dr informed me that I have to be put to sleep to do it! As soon as I heard that I started to freak out the anxiety got so bad I could hardly stand it! I have heard so many horror stories about getting sick with anesthesia! It is monday and I have only eatin enough in the last 4 days to barely keep me alive because im deathly scared of possibly v* from this anxiety that im feeling leading up to this surgery! My poor husband has been trying so hard to convince me that I will be fine, but im am soooo scared! The closer thursday gets the worse I get! I just hope i don't get nausea or v* after surgery!!

Tell the dr that you have a dodgy stomach and they will give you anti emetics in the drip. They do not want you v afterwards, trust me. I had them before my tonsils being out at 17 and my wisdom teeth at 19 and they really help. Also, not to make after surgery v minor, but if you DO v after it, you probably won't remember as you are kind of out of it for a few hours. Tell your DH to not tell you if you do! Honestly, you will be fine. Sorry about the surgery, but v is not that big of a deal from anesthesia.

Alsom make sure your DH gets you a stack of magazines and some easy to digest foods to minimize n after. Sometimes its best to eat gently for 12 - 24 hours after anesthesia just to be sure.

Aww, don't worry! Everyone has surgery at some point in their life, and rarely do they ever get sick. Like mdgirl1977 said, ask them to put anti emetics in your drip if it makes you feel better. You'll do great! <3

Yes, be totally honest with the doctor or nurses who are caring for you and they will do everything they can to help you and make you feel okay. They can definitely give you an anti emetic...and you can also ask what type of anesthesia they are using. If its' propofol (the drug Michael Jackson used), that has anti emetic properties in it and it wears off fairly quickly too. And not eating isn't going to help you...you need your strength and immunity kept up!!! Eat small but healthy and frequently. Good luck and hugs...

Thank you so much for the advice mdgirl1977! It makes me feel a little better knowing that something can possibly be done to avoid getting sick after the surgery! Thanks

I agree with what they said. My mom got sick after her first surgery and the second time they gave her something and she was fine. Also, if they want you to stay in the hospital stay there so they can give you anything you need. She insisted on going home even though they reccomened she stay for the day and my step dad had to call in for anti-emetics and go pick them up, much faster for the nurse to just give them to you.

Hi! So sorry you have to have surgery, that's never fun. I had to have a colonoscopy and endoscopy done In December (I had put it off for months because I was so darn scared of the anesthesia as well) and I had to fast and cleanse the day before (no food or pills only water) and the morning of the procedure I woke up with my period and terrible cramps to where I was crying and passing out on the way to the hospital. I couldn't take any pills and so they started my iv for fluids and zofran as soon as I got there (didn't even ask for zofran, they usually give it!) and a couple minutes later the doctor put something in and I felt really woozy and happy and the next thing I know I was opening my eyes asking for water and telling people I was beyonce I never even felt n* any time after waking up! It was actually a really pleasant experience and it felt really weird and cool. You have nothing to worry about, you will be perfectly fine! Good luck(:

Never had anesthesia myself, but this is a fear for me too. I always assumed it was the narcotic pain meds that caused nausea rather than the anesthesia itself? (Plus riding in a car is terribly nauseating on opiates. This is when a lot of the sickness takes place in my experience). My mom and sister both had surgery and avoided illness with anti-nausea meds. Mom got scopolamine/promethazine and sis got Zofran. Both worked like a charm. The car ride home was the only problematic bit, but even that didn't result in V*. Make a point to tell the doctor your concerns about nausea so they'll dose you up on anti-emetics.

The anesthesia itself knocks you out so you don't remember anything. You'll probably wonder why you got so worked up because it will all seem like a deep sleep after the fact!

This may not help but I'm a severe emetophobe... and have been for as long as I can remember.

When I had an appendectomy, the anesthesia did cause me to vomit... but it was not at all like having a sv. It wasn't painful and there was no nagging nausea. It happened and it was over. I was absolutely fine and didn't panic because it happened so quickly.

AND this DOES NOT happen to everyone. I probably vomited from it because I hadn't eaten for over a week because I had appendicitis.
