We just found out that I am 5 weeks pregnant. Wow, that was fast, we were just talking about trying last month and it happened straight away What I would like to know is did you all get morning sickness, how bad was it, when did it start, how long did it last, etc... I want to hear it all, the good and bad... I have friends and family whose stories range form not even a twinge of nto a little n here and there but no vto v and d etc...

My mother and sister eachhad a little n in their 1st pregnancies but neither of them everv... I knew I was pregnant even before taking the test and even before my period was late because I just felt very tired, got a little queasy (not n, there IS a difference) a few nights, my breasts hurt badly, having lots of trips to the ladies room, including during the night, excessive thirst, constapation, food adversionsand so on... I am just wondering if this is just the start of it, if the worst has yet to come or it is what it is and will stay that way...

Thanks in advance for your replies

Can't give you much advice, other than my mom had absolutely no n* or v* during both her pregnancies (I've already asked since one factor is heredity). She said she felt better than when she wasn't pregnant!!

I had been doing some reading on it (as an emet who would like to have kids in the next couple of years) and there seem to be 3 main factors: heredity, tendency to motion sickness, and tendency to side effects of medications, etc. For example: my mom had no morning sickness at all, I don't get motion sickness from cars, planes, boats, etc, and have never gotten n* or v* (or, for that matter, any other side effects) from medication, even when they were listed as possibilities. According to what I've read, my chances of having morning sickness are very low. I guess you could take your own factors into account. Just because one person gets sick, doesn't mean you will too, and don't forget about the power of suggestion and worry for emets!!

    Hi! CONGRATULATIONS!!

That happened to us!! one minute we were saying that we might try for a baby and the next I was pregnant. I have just stopped feeding my little girl - who was born just 15 months after my son!!!

Anyway - to the morning sickness issue. I was lucky and had nothing more than a little bit of n* which seemed to go provided I ate small amounts of food regularly - mostly starchy stuff. I still lost weight in the first three months both times despite constant grazing!!

Interesting to hear all the stuff about three indicators - haven't heard that before but it tallys completely with my family's experiences - my Mum gets motion sickness and did get morning sickness. I don't get anything like that and was fine.

I can totally support the anxiety bit too - I didn't find out I was carrying my little girl until I came back from a particularly indulgent foodie holiday in Italy - half a stone lighter and with 11cm's extra round my waist!! Turned out I was 8 weeks pregnant and whereas the n* started around week 6 with my little boy it didn't start until I knew I was pregnant with my little girl!!

So - in sum my advice is - don't wait till you are hungry before eating - eat by the clock - something starchy (or whatever you fancy) every 2 and a half hours worked for me AND try not to worry (easier said than done!)

Alongmore I have heard similar issues regarding hereditary and motion sickness as well. As I mentioned my mom and sis just had very mild queasiness which to me really means none. As far as the motion sickness, we own a boat and go on it quite oftenand thank God I have never gotten sick. If the waters were a bit rough I got more nervous than anything is all. I am actually thinking of going on now that I know I am pregnant but of corse staying near the calme water for safety.

Annbarick I am glad to hear of another who didn't v during her pregnancies. And also who was just talking about trying to get pregnant and it automatically happened. That is wonderful to hear. I am still in shock it happened 1st try as well... You sound like me with the grazing... I usually just pick all daylong from when I get up to right before I go to sleep. Whether it be some fruit, yogurt, bread and cheese, peanut butter and jelly with crackers, rice and beans, dry cereal, pretzels, plain, mild and starchy - carbohydrates mostly. And I am constantly sipping decaffeinated tea, water or seltzer too. And sucking on hard candies.

My doctor also gave me Premesis RX which is a prenatal vitamin specifically designed for morning sickness. I began taking them the day I found out I was expecting. Supposedly the controlled B6vitamin in the prenatal is supposed to help. Here's tohoping and praying that it does.

Congrats Belle!!!!!!I'm not sure about the three factors.Mabey they have to do with how strong your stomach is.I do get motion sickness, and am sensetive to medications and my mom had severe morning sickness all three times but I never got more than fatigue and quessyness. I heard hormones play a factor-someone once told me if it's a girl-that's when you get morning sickness-I had 2 girls. Someone told me if it's twins you get morning sickness-my best friend's sis had twins and no morning sickness. I read it's most likely the first pregnancy that is worse but me and everyone I've talked to at least say differantly. I ALSO read a study that people in third world countries report they don't even know what morning sickness is!So who knows?I think they really don't know why women get morning sickness. All I can tell you is eat small healthy meals-don't wait till you're hungry. For me, I could'nt tollerate the prenatal vitaminsand I once had to take an antibiotic and those were the only 2 times I felt nauseated enough to feel like v*ing. (I also had an sv*once while Iwas pregnant-the most recent sv*experience-but that does'nt count.)I know my mom said when she had morn. sickness-it started right after that 1st missed period(back them they gave anti-emets). Also I was sensative to teethbrushing(gag) so mabey wait a little bit in the a.m.and strangly enough-sneezingachooooo!!!

Talk to your Doctor about Ginger Tablets. They are a natural remedie that is often prescribed to pregnant women who experience nausea. Dont take anything without Doctors approval of course, but if he/she says it okay, they are supposed to keep your stomach quite settled...!! BEST OF LUCK AND CONGRATS

Oh - that just reminded me - I was sensitive to teeth brushing too - both pregnancies. I wasn't too bad in the morning but couldn't handle the taste of toothpaste at night - the firsttime I was pregnantI just brushed my teeth with water at night (not great but better than nothing). The second time - I found that I could cope with the taste of my little boy's toothpaste!!

Both times the sensitivity to toothpaste only lasted for the third and fourth months.

Hope everything is going well. A.

This is actually something I can help you out on! I had Zachary a year ago and was so worried about the morning sickness part. I talked to my doctor right away about my fear. Instead of putting me on prenatal pills she actually told me to take 2 flinestone vitamins until my second trimester....sounds crazy but she said the exact same vitamins are in these as what is in the huge horse pill prenatal vitamins. She said these are much easier on your stomach....she also gave me a prescription for...it starts with the letter"Z" cant remember the name...but it is what is given to people who are going through kemotheraphy (sp?) to control them getting sick. It was the best medicine in the world!!!!! Also I lived off of tums....Never got sick! Hope this helps!

I also recommend sea bands (sea sickness bracelets--I got mine at K Mart when I was pregnant) and make sure your stomach is never empty!! THis will help. Also, in stores like Motherhood and Mimi Maternity, as well as on their websites, you can buy Preggie Pops for morning sickness--they are lollipops for morning sickness, I don't know of they work from personal experience, but you might try them!

    And CONGRATULATIONS!!

First--congratulations!!!!!! As for the morning sickness----it will either happen or it won't. I don't know that you can really predict it. I had no risk factors and had severe morning sickness (really all day sickness) during my 1st pregnancy. After trying sea bands, vitamin b6, ginger and every other home remedy, I finally found Zofran (usually given to chemo patients). It worked great!!!! Also, I never actually v*****, I just felt queasy 24 hours a day before the Zofran. My second pregnancy, I had no morning sickness at all! Basically, my point is----Yes, it MAY happen, but can easily be treated. Good luck!

The only time I was sick in either one of my pregnancy's was when I was in labor with my first, I got an epidural and my blood pressure dropped resulting in my Ving. If it helps lay in bed for a bit when you wake up in the morning before you get up and start moving around.

    congrats!!!! thats so awesome!!!

i think morning sick ness varies with everyone. maybe it has something to do with genetics and you will only get a little n* but no v*
One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure its worth watching.

I agree, i think it's partially genetics--I am also a believer in the old wives' tale that you feel sicker with girls than boys--I was meaner and more emotional when I was pregnant with my son and I had more nausea (no v'ing) with the girls!

Congratulations. I have a set of twins and didn't feel any morning sickness at all. However, I did v* maybe 3 times during my pregnancy. Twice during my 4th month and once during my fifth. It happened so fast, I didn't have a chance to be afraid. In reference to the boy vs. girls situation....my twins are girls. I was recently pregnant with what I will assume was a boy, because I was n* all day everyday! I strongly believe that it not only varies from mother to mother, but also from pregnancy to pregnancy. I wish you the best of luck and congrats again!

Hi I'm new here and this is my first post so I hope it's ok if I jump right in!

I have three children and was n* with all of them but never v*. I "willed" myself not to. I used sea bands (like someone else said) and sucked on lemon drops a lot to keep my blood sugar up (but obviously not a good choice if you have problems with gestational diabetes). I also took emetrol which is pretty much just a sweet concoction with no drugs in it. I had to do a reading for my cousin's wedding and I was so terrified that I would v* at the pulpit, I chugged emetrol and it seemed to help. My n* lasted from about week 6 to about week 14.

    HTH and congrats!
