My bf son is really into Japanese things, we were just at the grocery store, and he wanted some sushi. I allowed him to get some, one one condition, there is nothing raw in them. He just ate it, and now I keep thinking he is going to get food posioning!! It is the spring rolls, it has that imitation crab meat, and vegetables in it. I just get so worried about eating premade foods. I didn't eat any (are you crazy??) but I am worried that he will get sick and I will have to help him when he is v*. I just hate that I think this way. I didn't want him to get any, but I know how much fun he would have eating them with chopsticks so I allowed it. I know they are made everyday fresh, but still. Am I totally nuts or what?

He should be fine. I was in Asia for 6 weeks and had sushi all the time and I was fine. I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think that raw fish can carry the kind of bacterias that pork, beef, and chicken may have.

No your not nuts! I wouldn't touch that stuff with a bargepole! But I wouldn't worry about your bf's son, chances are he's eaten it a million times and be fine.. I don't blame you for thinking like this, because in your shoes I'd be the same but trust me, it will be okay - theres such a low chance it'd be bad.. and i'm sure if it didnt agree with him in the past then he wouldn't try eating it again!

    Please don't worry

I pretty much live on sushi- I dont eat fish, but have california rolls and other korean-japanese fusion creations (including some with fried banana- yum) at least twice or three times a week and have yet to become ill from it. In a pinch I'll head down to the grocery store and pick up a premade pack (when I'm jonesing and low on cash).

If this is something that worries you I suggest you learn how to make it yourself and do it as an activity with the bf's son- it is really quite easy to make, and the ingrediants are pretty easy to find (basically sticky rice, rice vinegar, sea salt, sugar, seaweed wraps, and what you want in the middle). You dont have to use fish- carrot, avocado, egg, ginger, and other fun stuff make good fillings. If this interests you, I can provide a simple recipe and directions for you to experiment with- all you really need to do is find a bambo rolling mat.

Dont worry, I am asian lol. I eat a lot of weird things (eel...and I know if my dad had his way, he's give me frog lol, really, dont worry.). xD And I'm fine. I do eat that too. Everything that he ate as you described it sounds like the California roll...as it is called. Everything in it is cooked. I make my own sometimes. Really fun =]. I love sushi but I'm not Japanese xD Anyway, had he eaten the raw fish, its cured, so that it wouldn't have any bacteria in it. Chances of getting sick is really low.

Sweet- when I get home (currently at the boyfriends) I will drag up the 'official' recipe- I have been making sushi for about 6 years now, so I no longer follow what is written and go by what I like.

It's fine because that imitation crab meat is cooked. I eat sushi from stores, restaurants, anywhere, and I don't get sick.

Wing- I have experimented with Onigiri, but haven't been completely successful yet. I love it too! If you don't mind- what nationality are you? I love all types of asian food- especially vietnamese!

    http://japanesefood.about.com/od/sus...ner/r/sushiric e.htm

Here is a website that explains how to make the rice- note, they say to disolve the sugar and salt in the rice vinegar on the stovetop- but you can also do it in the microwave. (BEWARE- it will make your kitchen smell really bad for about an hour- the rice vinegar is potent stuff). Also, I would use sea salt- I find it ends up tasting a bit better.

You will need a bamboo mat (which you can get at some grocery stores- or you can also head to the local china town). I usually cover mine in saranwrap, that way the clean up is easier, and you wont end up scraping rice out between the little pieces of bamboo. You also need the seaweed sheets, and wasabi (which is a spicy japanese horseradish paste). I would go for the wasabi in a tube because it is easier to manage and less potent to the powder form.

As for ingrediants for the centre- feel free to experiment. Some common veggies that are used are cucumber, avocado, carrot, gourd, mushroom (usually s***ake)- you can even use peppers. Cut them into strips and you can use pretty much any combination that pleases you. You can also use imitation crabmeat, or egg. In terms of egg, I beat one egg with a tablespoon of flour, 2 teaspoons of sugar and a teaspoon of salt, and cook it like an omlette. After it is cooled I cut it into strips.

It's hard to explain how to roll without a visual, so I'll refer you to the same website:

    http://japanesefood.about.com/librar.../aa101700a.htm

once again, feel free to experiment! Just put rice down on the mat, and the sheet and toppings inside- if your rice is sticky enough youcan make a few decent rolls that way. You can also use sesame seeds on the outside of those types of rolls (or the inside of others).

Wasabi and pickled ginger (it's pink and yummy and found in chinatown in a jar, or in theethnic section of a good grocery store) are used as garnish. Beware- wasabi is really potent so only a small amount is needed. Although a large amount will certainly clear the sinuses

okay....so here are my completely disorganized instructions. It's a lot easier to show someone how to make it as opposed to telling someone how to do it!

Amber- I'm Chinese, but I eat all sorts of asian food. I think the only ones I haven't eaten much of areMalaysian (O_o speeeeelling?) and Korean. But I love Japanese food. xD And Vietnamese soups are good. =d. Onigiri is so much fun to make How do you make yours?

(To anyone that doesn't know, Onigiri are rice balls. Made entirely out of rice with a filling inside-can use anything. Soooo good. >_< lol)

I second that on the Wasabi. Ooo. I hate wasabi lol. Its sooo spicy. Its made of horse-radish. Best to mix with soy sauce if attempting to eat.

i LOVE sushi but i'll only eat it from one japanese restaurant near my house. when i was away at school my friend ate tuna rolls and got food poisoning, but keep in mind, she was eating crappy campus food! i understand where you're coming from because when i eat it i still get a little suspicious, but i wouldn't worry!

MMM i love sushi SO MUCH, just not the fishy kind. i´m really into having cucumbers, sooooooooo good. I also make my own, although they´re not that pretty. That way you can pick and choose what goes into them! I do seaweed on the outside and then rice, or rice and then seaweed on the inside. Whatever.

Although, i´m not a wasabi fan.

Michele, i´m sure that your bf´s son is fine. It´s very unlikely that he will get anything from it!

Don't worry, proper sushi is absolutely fine. I'm Japanese, and sushi is an utmost delicacy that I'm not treated often enough to Although the sushi sold in everyday supermarkets are (in my opinion) perhaps not as good quality as the ones you get in restaurants. Just don't get the impression that because sushi is raw, it leads to food poisoning.
