I would like to say that, after looking at your website, I am disheartened on behalf of other emetophobics. Firstly, the FAQ's are inaccurate and aggressive. I'd like to advise you that, yes, emetophobia is EXACTLY like other phobias - it works in the same way, has the same maintenance mechanisms and can debilitate people as can other phobias (e.g. social phobia, agoraphobia). Secondly, I wouldn't advise ANYONE to present their phobia to a therapist in the way you suggest, because it's unnecessarily rude and aggressive. Suffering from emetophobia does not excuse this. Finally, how can you possibly compare phobic reaction to trauma resulting from sexual abuse? This shows ignorance and self-indulgence and, frankly, you really should get your facts right before developing a website like this. You may be doing more harm than good with over-zealous, pseudo-psychological personal anecdotes and opinions.

you're the ignorant one. who are you? the fact that you're simplifying
this terrible and debilitating phobia leads me to believe you're not
even emetophobic. nothing better to do with your time than bash this
site? sad. and, i'm sorry to rain on your parade, but emetophobia is
not EXACTLY like other phobias. first of all, it's a complex phobia,
which makes it different from simple phobias right off the bat.
secondly, many people/ therapists have never even heard of
emetophobia! phobias may "work in the same way", have "the same
maintenance mechanisms and can debilitate people as can other
phobias", but how the hell does that make them all EXACTLY the
same?! once again, you're the ignorant one. do you suffer from more
than one phobia? i do. and i can tell you this... they're not EXACTLY
the same. i don't care that the same chemicals and parts of the brain
are responsible for each phobia, they're still very different from each
other. and i don't think that the suggested way to present
emetophobia to a therapist is rude at all... just honest! maybe you're
just a very sensitive person...? it's very difficult to explain this phobia
to a therapist. most have never heard of it. how would you
personally go about this? and phobic reaction may be the result of
childhood trauma, the same way other psychological disorders may
be. it was simply a comparison. once again, you're very touchy. i
don't think john has done any harm by creating this site. we're all
very lucky to have such a great support group. i haven't heard of
any harm it's caused yet. sorry you've been disappointed, you
NEVER have to come back.Edited by: prncesspnk

I agree with you. I think if someone doesn't like this site they don't have to visit it. It's that simple.

I think that you should find something better to do w/ your time than put down online communities. If you don't agree w/ the way this site is run then maybe you should come up with a site of your own. I'm sure we would all like to see what you can come up with. In the meantime please leave us alone.

I for one find this group of people very comforting and helpful. Living in a world full of people who don't understand this phobia is hard. These forums make me feel a little less alone.

It's ok, guys. (Thanks for coming to the site's defense though). I think this is just an anonymous poster who keeps sending me pm's and making comments on my blog.

I don't even know who they're talking about with getting "facts straight" when developing the site - the site was developed by an emetophobe to provide a place for people not to feel alone. His name is John. John asked me to be a moderator many years ago, and posted my FAQs in a special section cuz he thought they helped a lot of people. I also have several other articles posted on this site because the amount of scholarly information out there about emetophobia is extremely limited. Once I was successfully treated for the phobia, I became a clinical psychotherapist and now I treat almost exclusively emetophobic people. So the facts I cite come from proper academic research and my own education and experience in psychology.

I'm of course happy to engage someone else on any of these facts. But I highly doubt it will be a random troll who just throws out insults and doesn't back up their argument with anything!
