What happends to you</span> when you feel nauseous? Obviously, I have emetophobia and I have a story. Today I went on a field trip. So, we took a ferry to the place and my friends wanted to sit on the side of the boat. I thought nothing was going to happen to me. It turns out that I felt really dizzy and felt liek v*ing as soon as we got to the place. I was so scared I didn't want to v*. But for some reason, everytime I have the "panic attack" I start scratching myself and it kind of makes me A LITTLE feel better I don't know why...</span>

I do this too, and I think it is the distraction of it. You are giving yourself another sensation to focus on, instead of the nausea.

Yeah, I've done that before too. It's just anything to keep your mind off the panic. Especially if there's no way I can get up and walk outside for fresh air or something.

I've been known to do some pretty good damage to myself by scratching when n*. Earlier I had some d* and n* and gouged my legs while sitting on the toilet panicking.

It's a diversion, just like the others have said. And it helps.

I sometimes dig my nails into my arms. Like everyone else has said, it's just a distraction and gives me a different sensation to concentrate on.

I agree too. It's a distraction, and I do it quite often.

The few times I had severe n* I clawed and scratched myself to the point of causing bruises. So I know where you're coming from. Kim

That dizzy feeling is from going from ocean to land.. your ears and brain try to rebalance or something like that I think.. I've been sea sick before its an AWFUL feeling!! URGH.

Yeah I swallow a lot too, I clench my teeth, I don't scratch but I do stroke a part of my arm or leg up and down.. I also run my hands through my ponytail or strands of hair... and I also YAWN!! but its sometimes more the action of yawning and I odn't get that big relieving one that I feel needs to come.. I also try to drink something to make me burp. lol. I also chew gum and/or polo mints.

I usually try to curl up and focus on something outside of my body...pretend like I'm floating. I take in deep breaths, cause I know that short sharp breaths can cause you to vomit. I have scratched myself before. Usually when I'm nauseous I do everything I can to be alone. I HAVE to be alone so I can focus on a point and just sit there and leave my body. I can't talk to people and if I am nauseous when I'm with someone and I can't leave right away I get really fidgety and start playing with just about everything...rubbing my thighs, messing with my clothes, play with my hair...that kind of thing.

According to something I heard on Dr. Phil the other day, some people will distract themselves from what ever is going on around them or what they are feeling by intentionally hurting themselves to distract themselves from the situation. I guess it's your mind trying to cope with the situation.

I yawn a lot, and sip water. Most commonly I run my hands through my hair A LOT. You can always tell I'm anxious though when I put my hands on top of my head, as if I were doing some strange yoga move while walking. I don't know why, but it just relaxes me to have my hands resting on my head, sorta pushing down on it.

Yeah I think the hurting yourself is definately a distraction from the actual nausea/panic feelings. Heck I woke up real nauseas feeling just now, scared me good, and here I'm scratching my stomach with my nails. Thats the most common thing I do. I used to have to pace and pace, but thankfully now I can be nauseas and sit still. Oh yea, and come on this site if I can, it really helps!
