As some may know, yesterday was Canada's 139th birthday, which meant that all residents of Canada (or at least Ottawa, the capital) must wear their gaudiest Canada attire, and drink, preferably in excess.

My mom was in town to help me with the move (just moved from my puny bachelor apartment into a two-bedroom with my boyfriend), so we dressed up (at least Chris and I did) and headed downtown. I would have to say the highlight of the day was when Chris' beer was nearly confiscated at the entrance to the parliament buildings ground by the police (they were checking bags), yet when they came to the water bottles my mom and I filled with wine, we said it was apple juice and they didn't give it a second look. So, after some sweet talking, Chris managed to get the beer back on the promise that he would return it to the car, and mom and I drank almost 2 litres of wine throughout the day, lol. And thats not even counting the pub stops we made to relax and have some food.....no wonder I'm feeling a bit wonky today.

Anyway, here are some photo-highlights of the day- does anyone else have anything interesting to report? Any other pics of Canada day celebrations?

(note- the lemonade cup mom is carrying is filled with wine, lol)

PS- a polyester flag is TOOO warm to wear all day long in the sun. Just so you know.

I guess my contribution was playing a piece by a Canadian composer at a piano recital I did yesterday in Victoria

Yep Monica- everyone and their dogs have some sort of explosives, lol. While we were waiting for the "official" fireworks to start near the Quebec-Ontario bridge, all around us were people setting off randoms....and then hiding them when the police boats came around, lol.

Hope you guys all have a happy 4th of July And make sure to post any fun pics!~

how awesome! I live in a small fishing village called Steveston that's now basically a suburb of Vancouver. On Canada day we have a big "salmon festival" which is a hoot plus the weather here has been clear blue sky and 25 degrees for the last 10 days - no humidity. Wow. We had a big family barbeque and drank to excess then played charades with 9 of us. I laughed till I almost peed.

But I'd love to be in Ottawa some Canada day - they're so much more patriotic in central Canada. Most folks on the west coast don't even remember it's Canada day. Just some day to get off work or else get paid double time.

We had some official fireworks, but not many other fools. They save it for the even greater national holiday: Hallowe'en.

Kelly- if you or anyone else wants to come up for Canada Day in subsequent years, our spare room is your spare room.I think that everyone should make the pilgrimmage at least once in their lifetime, lol.

Mel, I got INSANE on Halloween. It's by far my favourite day of the year. I usually start planning my costume at the end of August, and will spend up to 200$ - yay for student loans coming in at that time. Last year I went as a porn-star nurse, complete with vinyl costume, thigh-highs, and long wig. I even rocked some false eyelashes. In previous years I have gone as a red angel, medusa, Xena warrior princess.....I just love dressing up, lol.

I still don't have an idea for this year- was thinking maybe Vegas showgirl, but its going to be cold, so dont want to be walking around with that. ANy ideas? I want something original, that no one else will likely have.

Where do you go for Halloween Amber? I think a Vegas Showgirl would be awesome!! My neighbour makes costumes every year for herself and their cats and dog. One year she was Rainbow Bright, another year she was Strawberry Shortcake with the huge hat and all. The animals were all Tootsie Rolls!! I love Halloween but I'm not creative enough to figure out a costume let alone make one.
